How can GRP gratings be used?
21 December 2022 By Jake
Think GRP gratings can only be used for flooring?
Think again.
Easy to work with, adapt and install – and offering all the qualities glass reinforced plastic is typically sought out for – it’s hardly surprising that gratings made of this material are being put to good use in all manner of ways.
Wondering if you could take more advantage of GRP gratings?
We’re pretty confident the answer is yes. So let’s start with a checklist of some of the most common applications to get you started…
Top 10 uses for GRP gratings
1. Anti-slip walkways
Without question one of the most well-known uses for GRP gratings is flooring. With built-in grip and a choice of a solid or open mesh surface, it makes a cost-effective and enduring walkway choice for any environment.
2. Bridges and ramps
If GRP gratings are good for walkways, it makes sense that they are a practical choice for bridges and ramps too. Outclassing alternatives in terms of practicality, affordability, and longevity.
3. Drain covers
Maintain easy access and visual of any potential problems or blockages by using open mesh GRP gratings as a drain cover.
Ideal for gullies and guttering, fluids can drain quickly to ensure a safe environment is maintained at all times.
4. Docks and jetties
Waterproof and highly resistant to rot and corrosion, there’s no denying GRP gratings are a great product to use in wet or damp environments – which is why they’re frequently sought after for rigs, docks, and coastal locations.
Offshore conditions can be particularly harsh – with salt water only the half of it – but GRP is capable of withstanding these brutal conditions, without demanding excessive care or maintenance.
5. Roof access
Roofs can be particularly awkward and dangerous areas to negotiate – but access is still required.
An ideal way to ensure safety is to use GRP gratings. Cut to virtually any size, they are easy to fit and can be adapted to the angles of any roofing system.
6. Service risers
Risers are an invaluable part of any building project and allow safe progress to be made on site. GRP gratings work brilliantly as secure risers. Being almost 80% lighter than steel, they are far easier to lift and remove when access is required – as well as being slip resistant when walked over.
7. Security fencing and screening
Whilst there is specific GRP fencing, GRP gratings can also be used as an effective barrier to boost security levels and prevent unwanted access.
Gratings can also offer a visual barrier – screening or disguising equipment, utilities, or anything else you would prefer not to have on show.
8. Platforms and mezzanines
Available in a range of colours – typically grey, green, yellow, and blue – GRP gratings can help users to navigate varying levels safely by using colour as a marker.
In settings where people or equipment may be situated below a mezzanine or platform, you can opt for solid top gratings or small mesh to prevent items from falling through the gaps.
9. Strengthening
Need to add more strength to your storage, fencing or reinforce a wall? GRP gratings are a great way to bolster defences and provide additional support.
10. Insulation
In many settings protection from the elements is essential – so too is preserving heat. Solid GRP gratings are a great way of adding insulation, helping to keep the elements out and heat in.
