8 things to consider when choosing GRP fencing

Fencing.

Not the sexiest topic – but it is an important one.

Building sites, warehouses, school fields – regardless of setting or location, a proper fencing solution can be a game changer. Enhancing surroundings, boosting safety, and taking your security to the next level.

One of the most popular options on the market is GRP fencing – and opting for this is a great move. But if you’re going to maximise its potential, there are still several things to consider before placing an order.

1.    Access

You’re installing a fence to keep unwanted visitors out – but does anyone need to get in?

Take time to think about access. Will workers, vehicles or equipment need to pass through the fencing? Even if this isn’t a regular requirement, you will still need to factor in how it can be accommodated if you’re to prevent a future headache.

 2.    Mounting

How permanent is your fencing? What sort of surface will it be installed on?

These are essential considerations before ordering. GRP I-Beams can either be cast into the ground or surface mounted with GRP floor cleats.

3.    The level of security needed

Do you want to keep expensive equipment out of site? Prevent passers-by from seeing what lies beyond the fence?

If so, then solid GRP fencing may be preferable to individual railings which will allow some visual access through.

Using solid GRP 500 for the slabs, is an excellent lightweight alternative to concrete slab fencing (making it much faster and easier to erect).

The shape of your fencing also needs thinking about – will you go for a single or triple-point profile…or is a flat top more suitable?

Fence height is another important security consideration. The higher the fence the less penetrable your site will be. We offer stock lengths of 1.8m, 2.1m, 2.4m and 3m, with other sizes available on request.

4.    Aesthetics

Need to protect your premises from intruders?  Or keep restricted areas out of bounds? If these are your priorities, the look of your fence may not seem important – but it’s still worth considering.

A smart fence can go a long way to enhance the look of your premises. With a choice of colour, typically grey, green, black, or white, you could opt for a finish that complements the surroundings. For example, grey if your fence will act as a continuation of a grey factory wall, or green if it’s amongst trees and fields.

Alternatively, colour can be used to promote company colours or to highlight or define different areas.  

5.    Quantity

How big is the site you intend to fence off? Properly identifying the area you wish to secure will help to focus thoughts on where the fence will run, and allow you to accurately plan quantities, access requirements etc.

Thankfully, GRP fencing is incredibly simple to work with. It can be cut and drilled on site, so you’re always guaranteed a perfect secure fit.

6.    Price

With no long-term maintenance needs and resilience levels that promise to provide years of effective security, GRP fencing is massively cost-effective. But this doesn’t mean all GRP fencing is created equal – or at the same price!

7.    Local restrictions

There’s nothing more frustrating, or time-wasting, than deciding on your security fencing only to face restrictions from the local planning department.

Often your fence design will be unaffected, but local restrictions could place constraints on aspects such as the colour and height, so it’s worth checking things out at an early stage to avoid any potential problems.

8. Safety

As part of enhancing security are there any other safety measures you could put in place?

Would anti-slip flooring, or walkways be beneficial? Helping to keep traffic to a designated route and prevent any nasty slips or falls once on site.
