Why GRP products make sense in summer
31 May 2023 By Jake
Materials often market themselves as being able to withstand severe weather conditions. Rain, snow, and ice are typically listed among the biggest problems. But we can’t put all the focus on winter – the intensity of summer sunshine can be just as damaging.
Despite this, there are fewer materials designed to withstand the full force of summer. Fewer still able to cope with the extremities of all seasons.
So, what’s the answer?
We’re glad you asked. One material that can take both the harsh chill of winter and the heat of summer is glass reinforced plastic – otherwise known as GRP, or as we like to call it, the answer to your prayers!
Wondering why GRP is a better alternative to any other material? Here the HR Kilns team takes a closer look at what makes GRP products hot property in summer.
Benefits of GRP products in summer
– Stand up to UV rays
GRP products aren’t weakened by ultraviolet rays. No matter how strong the sun is, you can be confident your product won’t be compromised by the intense summer sunlight.
– Increase visibility
With more daylight hours, it can be tempting to switch off lights. Whilst this is a great move for the electricity bill, it can impact safety.
Both dawn and dusk last longer in the summer. During these twilight hours, there’s only partial illumination – making hazards harder to spot! Keep stairs and walkways safe by opting for GRP step covers.
Not only do these immediately increase grip underfoot, but if you opt for photo-luminescent covers, edges will also remain visible for up to 20 hours after the light source is removed – enhancing visibility and protecting users in the half-light of a late summer’s evening.
– Reduce slip risks
Dew can be a particular problem in August, increasing moisture levels and heightening the risk of slippery surfaces.
Invest in GRP gratings, which have built-in grip, to create safe walkways whatever the weather.
– Avoid being too hot to handle
Ever touched a metal handrail that’s been in the sun all day? Ouch!
Protect users and ensure people don’t avoid using the bannister by switching to a GRP handrail, which will stay cool to the touch for much longer than its metal counterparts.
– Reduce fire risk
As temperatures rise, so does the risk of a fire starting. Good to know, then, that products made from GRP are fire retardant, helping to prevent or slow the spread of fire and reduce this threat.
– Lighten the load
Worried about the team lifting and working with heavy materials during scorching temperatures? Whilst there is no law for maximum working temperatures in the UK, it is highly recommended to keep conditions as comfortable as possible – especially if workers are engaged in physical labour.
So it makes sense to switch to GRP wherever possible. Lighter and easier to work with, a switch as simple as changing from steel ladders to GRP ladders can massively improve working conditions on a hot day, with GRP being up to 80% lighter than steel.
– Avoid peeling paint
Have intense rays made paintwork peel? Banish the problem by switching to GRP.
GRP products come pre-coloured, with no risk of peeling or any need to repaint or stain. They also won’t fade – important if colour is being used for practical purposes, such as defining walkways or distinguishing uses.
This is also especially beneficial when it comes to GRP fencing, eliminating the arduous chore of painting from the list of maintenance tasks.
